Charleston Fashion Week 2012

Having experienced New York Fashion Week a number of times, both in the role back of house production as well as a seated guest, I must say that after attending Charleston Fashion Week (CHSFW), I was pleasantly surprised.

The city of Charleston is alluring within itself; what with the beautiful homes, historical sights, gardens and spectacular food. Plus, the view of the Charleston Harbor on a clear day is simoly stunning so, when you take all of that and add to it the excitement of fashion, it's no doubt a winning combination!

What better introduction to my CHSFW experience than to hob knob with all the other stylish VIP's? The Chris Benz event and truck show at Hampden (www.hampdenclothing.com) on King Street proved to be an opportunity to do more people watching than I have since the last time I was in NYC! My "fashionista in crime", Joy Randall and I spotted Mychael Knight (Project Runway Season 3) and I had the opportunity to chat it up with a true fashion icon, Fern Mallis. So, I'm thinking, if the widely credited creator of NYFW is here, CHSFW must be on point.

Following the VIP event and before making our way to "the tents", we took a leisurely stroll down King Street. I fell in love with one very SOHO-esque boutique called Wothwhile and the trip inside was certainly that! With everything from Christian Lacroix notebooks to flowy fabrication dresses with leather trim, this store was quite impressive to say the least.

In fact, many of Charleston's local shops were very intriguing. I spotted this unique creation in one of the boutique windows. Oh how I love creativity!

Shopping and window shopping complete, we made our way to Style Lounge Pre-Party held in one of the tents at Marion Square sponsored by smartwater. Inside, there were lots of fashionable folks having a good time enjoying the vendors, networking and definitely hanging out at the bar. I mean, what's a fashionable night out without a few cocktails?

The runway shows began at just around 7:30pm and just before the models hit the runway, I was treated to a back of house tour. I loved the professionalism and the organization of the hair and make up areas.

Planted in my seat and ready to enjoy a night of fashion, prior to the "Rock the Runway" model competition and the emerging designer collections were presented, we were treated with a viewing of my newest, most favorite local store, Gwynn's of Mt. Pleasant! (http://gwynns.com/) Check out this video of the models' final walk.

The emerging designers' work gave a glimpse into the type of talent CHSFW looks for when selecting the semi-finalists. Presenting on this night were, Keely Lauren Cansler, Emily Pollard, Ashley Newsome, Shelly Lucille Smith and Hannah Goff. Some of these extremely talented designers gave us classic looks while others went avant guarde but each had their own personal perspective on fashion. Here's my pick for one of the most "interesting" looks of the evening. The face plate is intriguing...don't you agree?

From a production standpoint, the shows looked professional, the lighting and staging was awesome and the front-of-house set up gave me a big city fashion appeal. I wasn't as impressed with the models as I would have liked however, I really love how the city of Charleston shows it's support for the event and seem to rally together to present the common goal of highlighting fashion and style. Markets smaller than NYC don't always get it right in that department and events becomes more about the creators than the fashion itself but Charleston certainly gets it and sets an fabulously stylish example.

Pursuit of Perfection - Lexus CT Hybrid

Driving the Lexus CT Hybrid for the first time was quite an interesting experience. Once I got accustomed to the placement and styling of the gear shift including the one touch, push button park and 4 mode driving selections from Eco to Sport, "Lexi" Lexus proved to be one of the most enjoyable drives, I've experienced in quite some time. Plus, look at that face! Is this not the most adorable grill ever?

And check out the Green pop of color on the center console. Very Eco-chic!

With all the special amenities and sleek design look of the car, I had to show her off to some of my fashionable friends and what better time to do that than CIAA weekend?

Krystal Ellison, Head Designer and Founder of KLE Handbags

Joy Randall, Owner/Founder - Flawless Makeup Art

CIAA is a time in Charlotte, NC when the city is flooded with people, parties and the love for basketball and this year because it was the 100th Anniversary of the CIAA, there was even more excitement than usual. Even The First Lady, Michelle Obama made a stylish appearance while promoting her "Lets Move" initiative.

Now, let's talk about the Lexus CT. Boasting a fuel economy of 43 City MPG, I certainly put that to the test with the various trips to uptown I made during the week and the handling of the car had me feeling as if I was it's actual owner within the first 24 hours. Meanwhile, we did lots of food shopping for our house guests at Bi-Lo and Lexi's clean look, because white is always classic, definitely made her the envy of the parking lot.

This is one of those cars that if you want to make the transition to a hybrid without the "look" of it, the Lexus CT a perfect choice. Fashion and style at its finest with enough cargo space to haul "the teenager" back to college after a long weekend break. It's the best of both worlds.

Thanks to my friends at Toyota/Lexus, I travelled stylishly as well as comfortably.

I had such a good time with Lexi, I wore my new Michael Kors driving gloves every day!

Parent company, Toyota sponsored the CIAA Fan Experience and that offered me the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the "green" Toyota models as well.

Here's a peak at my 2 favs!

Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Toyota Prius V

So, no matter what you're looking for Toyota/Lexus/Scion has it and style is a necessity, never compromised.

Solid Gold

You've seen all of these cheesy commercials and signs for places that want to "buy your gold jewelry" so why not trade gold for gold? If you want to get rid of some old stuff and make some money, I'm gonna show you how you can spend it all over again!

In my search to find the most fabulous gold fashions, I ran across a few that were delicious enough to make my mouth water!

Introducing the Giuseppe Zanotti Metallic Leather Curved-Wedge T-Strap Sandals

It's kinda hard to find gold sandals that don't feel like they should be worn by a little old lady but these are absolutely the epitome of fashion forward-ness!

If that's a bit too snazzy for you, here's a classic pair you'll be able to enjoy for a lifetime. The Alexander McQueen Metallic Python Slingback T-Strap Sandals are super chic and appropriate to wear for an evening out paired with your favorite LBD or with jeans and a flowing summer top.

And let's not forget, no look is complete without a fancy little clutch. I absolutely love this bag by Nancy Gonzalez. The Croc Metallic Clutch is the perfect mix of glam and texture.

Want something a little larger? Check out this Chloé Marcie Metallic Large Hobo Bag. It's roomy enough to hold all of your "must have" items and chic enough to make all of your friends envious!

Genesis Style 3.8

Once again, the StyleMayvin has had the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of being one of the press elite members! Yup...you guessed it, here's another fabulous auto review, the SM way.

Hyundai has certainly come a long way and when I had the opportunity to drive the Genesis, I was completely sold. When this Korean owned and manufactured automotive company decided to take a stab at luxury car making, they won! Not every auto manufacturer and designer can do that successfully, but they did and really proved their critics wrong.

When I drove Gina Genesis (yes...that's her name) over to FOX News on the day I went to talk awards show fashion, my co-hosts for the segment fell in love. And rightfully so... Check out the always dapper David Watkins as he plays around with some of the cars features.

And, not to be outdone, my friend and fellow FOX News personality, Joey Hewell had a great time adjusting the XM Satellite Radio.

The Genesis was not only a joy to drive, the handsome styling was a head turner for sure. I started to wonder if people were just noticing my personal beauty more or if it was the fabulosity of the car! Literally, at almost every stop light, I was being ogled. And, coming in at just over $43k, the model I drove for the week in twilight pearl blue and cashmere colored interior, proved to be one of the easiest, sexiest, most comfortable cars to drive. I mean, the photo opps alone excited me...See!

While conducting a highway driving test, I was able to not only feel the power and responsive throttle that called for an extremely quick acceleration, even while wearing my favorite heels. Well, of course this pic was taken just before I headed out for the day to show Gina off but you catch my drift.

When my family and I made a day trip out of town, I noticed that the Genesis literally almost drove itself. The smart cruise control allowed me to drive for over 75 miles without ever touching the accelerator or brake while the car automatically kept a safe distance from the cars in front me and those moving into my lane. One safety feature that came in really handy was the LDWS - Lane Departure Warning System. Sometimes on a long drive, like most divas, I get a little distracted with my thoughts of fashion grandeur so when I slightly drifted into the lane next to me, the warning beep sounded to keep me alert. Needless to say, since I was traveling with my husband and kids, the LDWS was a awesome feature to have.

What was most interesting to me on our trip was that most of the small talk during my family gathering was about the Genesis; ironically, not solely amongst the men. Women can definitely spot a good thing when they see it, especially from a styling perspective.

While most of my family know that I drive a Mercedes S500 and there were Cadillacs, BMW's and a few other luxury car brands in the driveway, the conversation seemed to always come back to Gina Genesis! That goes to show just how impressive she looked. Even my 13 year old son preferred to spend his time inside the car with his iPod plugged in, enjoying the crystal clear sound of the vehicle's 17 speakers. To his surprise, my husband made it a point to school him on the fact that this car boasts an extremely impressive Lexicon System, also used only by Rolls Royce. Now that's what I call major style at an affordable price!

From the exterior color with a little added sparkle, to the clean lines of the interior, this car is one of the most stylish I've driven yet. The attention to detail like this convenient little place to keep track of my keys, was simply amazing.

I was continually impressed by the features of this car and simply cannot say enough about the convenience of the air tight cabin, what with all of the usual outside noise on the streets and highways. Case and point, I was actually able to continue a phone conversation without missing a beat, using the hands free Bluetooth feature of course, while a passing fire truck in active duty flew by. Amazing!

In all, this car is perfect for the "lazy" driver who can enjoy the many conveniences of it's assisted driving capabilities and is just as ideal for the power loving enthusiast but most importantly, it has all the bells and whistles any fashionistas would love and learn very quickly as I did, that she doesn't want to live without. Plus, for the ladies like me who believe in looking your best both day and night, Gina Genesis sure knows how to turn up the heart and put on an evening glow. Just look at that face...you gotta love it!

I could go on and on about the Genesis all day but hey...why not try it for yourself? With all the standard and extra amenities available, let's just say, for me, this car was very hard to send back to the fleet so on our final day together, I put on my most casual, yet stylish look for one last shot.

Getting Ready For The Races

Here I go again with the shoe fetish!

These are just the pair I need for the horse races this year. I usually wear wedges because I hate it when my heels sink into the grass...mainly because that is like the worst shoe abuse! However, these Miu Miu
Check Bow-Detail Slingback Pumps
are perfect! Don't you agree?
