Cover Stars

When your fashion mag has been around for so many years, I suppose it's not to strange that you might want to have not one, not two but six covers for the month of May. And...should you decide to produce 6 covers, wouldn't it be the most ideal concept to have modeling's brightest shining stars grace them? Well, DUH...of course.

That One Time Gucci Stole My Heart

I. Have. Been. Waiting. for a campaign just like this!!!

I'm trying to express just how much Gucci stole my heart with this campaign and for many be what could be the first time EVER, I can't find the words. Not only is it rare to see African American/Black models in a luxury campaign but for the entire pre-fall 2017 campaign to be 100% black...well, that completely unheard of. The smiles on their faces and the fun that undoubtedly ensued, as captured in the photos, is matched only by the overwhelming happiness in my fashion heart.  Here are few of my favorite shots...

Thanks Gucci for making this happen. You da best!

Irving Penn Centennial - The Met

The Metropolitan Museum of Art will present a major retrospective of the photographs of Irving Penn to mark the centennial of the artist’s birth. Over the course of his nearly 70-year career, Irving Penn (1917-2009) mastered a pared-down aesthetic of studio photography that is distinguished for its meticulous attention to composition, nuance, detail, and printmaking. Irving Penn: Centennial, opening April 24, 2017, will be the most comprehensive exhibition of the great American photographer’s work to date and will include both masterpieces and hitherto unknown prints from all his major series.

Long celebrated for more than six decades of influential work at Vogue magazine, Penn was first and foremost a fashion photographer. His early photographs of couture are masterpieces that established a new standard for photographic renderings of style at mid-century, and he continued to record the cycles of fashions year after year in exquisite images characterized by striking shapes and formal brilliance. His rigorous modern compositions, minimal backgrounds, and diffused lighting were innovative and immensely influential. Yet, Penn’s photographs of fashion are merely the most salient of his specialties. He was a peerless portraitist, whose perceptions extended beyond the human face and figure to take in more complete codes of demeanor, adornment, and artifact. He was also blessed with an acute graphic intelligence and a sculptor’s sensitivity to volumes in light, talents that served his superb nude studies and life-long explorations of still life.

Exhibition Dates: April 24–July 30, 2017
Exhibition Location:  The Met Fifth Avenue, NYC Gallery 199

Who's Who Of Urban Art

In NY state and feeling Artsy? From April 8 to July 15, the ground floor of ArtsWestchester’s gallery in White Plains will highlight legendary artists who rose to prominence in the 1980’s, a pivotal moment in graffiti’s burgeoning culture.
Chronicling the meteoric rise of the urban artist from vandal and outlaw to cultural trendsetter, ArtsWestchester’s exhibition From the Streets: An Exhibition of Urban Artwill feature murals, paintings, photography, sculpture and installations from artists at the cutting edge of their discipline.

This was an era where a spirit of competition fostered innovation and birthed a unique mode of artistic expression. From the Streets tracks these artists’ continued influence on urban visual culture and examines the shift from the streets to the gallery and museum. Artists exhibited on the gallery’s second floor are internationally recognized for creating provocative work informed by the attitude and style of street art’s pioneers.
From the Streets exemplifies the scope and evolution of a subculture that has become a global movement. To accompany the exhibition, ArtsWestchester will present a series of film screenings and music happenings that position the artwork within a broader cultural context. Included in these programs are screenings of the documentaries “Saving Banksy,” and “The Mural Kings.” The later follows exhibiting artists TATS CRU (BIO, BG183, and NICER) as they produce a mural for the Graffiti Hall of Fame in Harlem. A discussion with the artists will follow. Also planned are: a panel talk with museum and art-world professionals, a Women of Hip-Hop performance, and an evening with the legendary rapper and songwriter Grandmaster Caz, accompanied by Grand Wizzard Theodore, the DJ credited as the inventor of scratching.

From the Streets will open at ArtsWestchester on Saturday April 8 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. and the exhibit will run through Saturday July 15.

ArtsWestchester is located at 31 Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains N.Y. The exhibition will be on view through July 15.  Admission is free to the public. Docent tours of the exhibit are available to the public and for private groups with a suggested per person donation.
