BET Awards 2010

I realized last night while watching the 2010 BET Awards Pre-show that it really is a "pre-show" with actual performances (Duh T.Strong! lol) and NOT an E! red carpet scenario. So...for those of you who were looking to be completely enthralled in the fashion aspect of the awards like I was, but didn't quite get it...I've got a quick StyleMayvin viewing for you.

Here's a look at who I thought really worked the red carpet!

My top pick...Ashanti, who took the high road and went long and elegant in this red floor length gown.

Kerri Hilson and Nia Long went with short dresses this year showing off beautifully toned legs. I loved both looks!
And...since I'm such a shoe buff, I have to recognize Eva Marcille for wearing the hottest shoes on the red carpet in my opinion. Step girl!

Now I'm gonna throw a little suggestion out there... To all of the BET executives, I'm thinking that next year there should be a red carpet, style and fashion only show for all the fashionistas out there. You could certainly air it online if adding it to the "pre-show" doesn't work for your production schedule and here's the best idea I've had all year...guess who should host it? Yes! Yours truly...StyleMayvin!

Distressed...

One of the most comfortable items in your closet...denim has made a short shorts comeback! Remember Daisy Duke and her "Daisy Dukes"? Well, check out these Topshop cutoff's (no longer available) Rachel Bilson is sporting. I love the look of distressed denim shorts and a cute plaid or gingham button down shirt. It's fresh, it's cool and it's super chic paired with flats or heels. Throw on a stylish pair of shades and you're on your way!

Although these exact shorts are no longer available, you can very easily copy this vibe. Try the "Trista" Frayed denim shorts from Forever 21 for $19.80. Or if you want something a bit longer, go for the Skinny Denim Bermuda Shorts from American Eagle for $29.95. Now get out there and show 'em some leg!

Creating Your Own Shade

I LOVE hats. Cowboy hats, straw hats, fedoras, page boys, hats with feathers, fitted caps, you name it...I'll wear it. To me, hats give me a totally different attitude. A big floppy hat makes me feel girl, a fedora might add a little swagger to my T.Strong sass and a cowboy hat makes me feel "cool as a fan". So here are a few "must have" styles for summer and it's the best way to create your own shade!

The Solid Cowboy raffia hat is a style you can't go wrong with if you're confident enough to wear it. Available at David and Young for $39.99 and also comes in Black.
This fedora by Christy's of London ($48) is available at Searle NYC and the attitude the model in the photo is giving is EXACTLY how I feel when I'm sporting my fedora. This is hands down my favorite style of hat! Move over men...ladies look just as dapper in a fedora as you do!

Really want to throw some serious shade? This dark brown, floppy, straw hat ($29.50) from The Gap is PERFECT for doing just that! Great for the beach or to simply spice up your new maxi dress for a day out with the girls. You can't go wrong with this style. Throw on a pair of sunglasses and off you go!

Luxurious Lips

Tom Ford who pretty much single handedly turned around the fashion house, Gucci has recently thew his hand into the ring of Lipstick. Sounds a bit off considering he's a fashion designer but if he can create such beautiful looks for the body, I know that Ii for one would totally trust him with my lips. *smile*. The Private Blend Lip Colors are available in Blush, Ginger Fawn and Nude. You too can have luxuriously kissable lips by Tom Ford for $45 at Neiman Marcus.

Tony Awards 2010

With so much going on in television on the night of the Tony's what with True Blood's Premiere and the NBA Finals, the Awards show may have suffered just a bit in the ratings except for the die-hard, no holds barred fashionistas who wanted to check out the red carpet fashions like myself. Well honestly, I was just a bit disappointed actually. There were a few good looks but I expected much more.

Anywho...the best red carpet look of the evening goes to...Scarlett Johansson. She wore a hunter green, fully embroidered gown by Ellie Saab. The cut and design fit her body type perfectly and her updo was quite complementary as well.

Cate Blanchett wore a silver metallic Armani Prive suit which I personally thought was cute. I may have word a more sexy shoe but overall, good choice Cate.

And last but not least...I love this style of dress because I have one myself! The navy blue strapless mini dress by J. Mendel worn by Laura Linney is sassy, sexy and elegant all rolled up into one. She has the perfect body for it and it gives her the look of "legs for days". That very well might be my favorite thing about this dress type as I absolutely LOVE my own legs!

Congratulations to all of the Tony award winners! Special shout to two of my favorite actors, Denzel Washington - one of the stars in the Broadway musical Memphis (won Best Musical) and Catherine Zeta-Jones (won Best Actress in a Musical) for her performance in A Little Night Music.

Hot Heels for Summer

Wooden heeled, strappy sandals are so in this season. If you don't have a pair here a cute version by Steve Madden for $159.95 if you're into bright and bold colors. They also come in Gold and Black if your style is a bit more subdued.
I'm getting excited about summer style and not necessarily summer heat unless it's in the Caribbean. These would look great walking toward Gate 15, Concourse A for a flight headed straight to Barbados! Hmmmm...

Fashion's Oscars

"And the nominee's are..."

The 2010 CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Awards were as fabulous as ever! Here's my pics for Best Look of the Night!

Iman with husband David Bowie. The Supermodel look superb in a black strapless, fishtail gown by Giambattista Valli.

Loving this look for THE Anna Wintour! Work mama!

Now, a lot of folks weren't really "feeling" SJP's choice of dress but I thought it was very pretty and quite elegant. Not just because I like her style, nor because the gown was designed by the late, GREAT Alexander McQueen (although he is a personal favorite) but more so because she carried it. It's not the clothing that make the person, it's HOW confident the person is in the clothing and I give Sarah Jessica Parker two thumbs up for doing this dress justice!
I also have honorable mentions going to Gweneth Paltrow and Dakota Fanning but I was most excited for Marc Jacobs who won the award for Womenswear Designer of the Year and Jason Wu, winner of the Swarovski Award for Womenswear recognizing emerging talent. Congratulations to you both!

2010 World Cup Tees

I am very disappointed that I will not be able to attend FIFA - World Cup in South Africa this month but luckily I can still get a small taste of the "games" fashion-wise with EDUN. They are an environmentally and socially conscious label (which we love) and the proceeds from these 100% organic tees will benefit African school children with lunches and supplies.

Starting today through June 8th, you can show your support and get your very own tee at Barneys New York for only $60 or at EDUN.com. If you're fortunate enough to attend the World Cup Festivities beginning on June 8th and running until July 11th, please send your street fashion and glam event pix to stylemayvin@gmail.com!
