SAG Awards 2011

The 17th Annual Screen Actor's Guild Awards Red carpet arrivals was simply exhilarating! What a fabulous evening of fashion! Here are my top three pick's for best dressed and an honorable mention.

First ...Mila Kunis in a red and orange Alexander McQueen strapless gown. She literally set the red carpet a blaze with this look.

Second...I LOVED Jennifer Lawrence in this hot pink Oscar de la Renta gown. I wrestled with whether to make this my number one of number 2 pick. I mean these two ladies were really stunning last night. This look is classic, clean yet bold and the color simply put it over the top. Great choice Jennifer!

My 3rd choice for best dressed is Sophia Vergara. Being the Latin fire cracker that she is, I was getting quite used to seeing her in red so this blue Roberto Cavali dress is a surprisingly beautiful change. Fitted in all of the right areas, this gown shows us (as if we didn't already know) how fit and sexy Ms. Vergara truly is.

The best dressed honorable mention goes to Natalie Portman. The more I see her, the more I love her look. Since the "baby bump" seems to be the new black, Natalie did a wonderful job of showing hers off . She was definitely a glowing mother-to-be wearing a white, fitted, strapless Azarro gown and $2 million worth of Tiffany jewels certainly added to the glow.

Chanel Haute Couture 2011 S/S Fashion Show

Flawless White

I've said this before but my absolute favorite item in my closet is my white blouse(s)! Honestly, I love almost any white shirt but this spring, the key item to have is a white blouse. Beside the fact that it pairs perfectly with EVERYTHING, it creates a look of "effortless style".

This entire look from Moschino's Spring 2011 collection right down to the dark shades and rolled up "mom jeans" is trendy yet classic. The perfect mix!
If you want to drop close to a $1000 on a shirt, well this is the one for you. The Annabeth Pleated Linen Shirt in an homage to Victorian design by Ralph Lauren is available at Neiman Marcus.
I have white shirts that range from expensive to an under $20 purchase so it's not necessarily about the price tag but more so about the look. For a polished, chic look pick up a stylish white blouse...it's definitely a Spring 2010 essential.

First Lady in Red

I have been a fan of Michelle Obama's fashion sense from the very beginning and this Alexander McQueen dress just reminded me of how much I love having a smart, stylish First Lady.

Because I don't believe in spreading negativity...especially not when the reputation of fashion is at stake, I will not comment on why people are analyzing why she wore this particular color or this particular designer for the state dinner with the President of China. I think that sometimes fashion is all about fashion...that's it! No more. No less and in this case Mrs Obama got her look 100% right! Apparently, she could also take a little stab at designing as well. Mrs. Obama slightly altered this full skirted gown designed by Sarah Burton of the London house Alexander McQueen which originally came with short sleeves. I personally love the show of shoulders and the slight asymmetric neckline. Cudos First Lady!

Red Carpet - Golden Globes 2011

Let me just start by saying...I LOVE FASHION!

My goodness...the Golden Globes red carpet arrivals really were spectacular last night. So spectacular in fact that I could not choose a top three! I have waaaay more than 3 favorites but I do have an absolute #1 and that is the very princess-like look worn by Olivia Wilde (Actress: House). The chocolate brown, strapless Marchesa gown with big ombre sequins was EVERYTHING! The fitted bodice with a full skirt looked beyond graceful on the red carpet and THEN...she went the extra mile and wore the most spectacular, yellow Christian Louboutin's I may have ever laid eyes on. They're so hot I had to show you the close up! Don't you love them??? I mean really, I need to rant about this for just a moment longer as I simply CANNOT contain my excitement. Most would have opted for a simple shoe...maybe a matching brown or even black strappy sandal but not Ms. Olivia! I would not change a single thing if I had worn this outfit myself. From head to toe, this look is absolutely AWESOME!

Also on my favorites list is Natalie Portman (Actress: Black Swan). This pale pink Viktor & Rolf, gown with red rose detail is quite possibly the cutest, sweetest look I've seen covering an equally cute baby-bump. I loved the clutch and jewelry choice and her up swept hair put the finishing touch on this look. Her stylist did a fantastic job!
Up next...Jennifer Lawrence (Actress: Winters Bone) who is definitely one to watch this awards show season, looks fabulous in a black and grey Louis Vuitton gown with ruffle detail and open back. Roger Vivier shoes, Judith Leiber clutch and Chopard Jewelry. I love the way the ruffles literally cascade down her frame. Not many can pull off this type of dress...you really have to be tiny. Otherwise, it's just a massive amount of ruffles...not attractive. Cudos to Jennifer!
And then...there was the Green Queens! I loved seeing emerald green on the red carpet and it was a favorite of some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Angelina Joile in a vintage style Versace gown and Robert Procop Jewels and Mila Kunis in Vera Wang were both quite beautiful.
Honorable mentions also go to Catherine Zeta Jones (as a Green Queen), Dianna Agron, Jullianne Hough, Eva Longoria, Sofia Vergara, Christina Aguilera and Sandra Bullock. Great job ladies...I can't wait for the next red carpet!

BET Honors 2011

For the 4th year, BET presented BET Honors, an event to honor six legends in music, service, arts and education. Saturday night the red carpet was blazing hot with fashion. Here are some of my favorite looks.

Nicole Ari Parker in a one shoulder, chiffon overlay gown.

The Host for the 3 year running, Gabrielle Union graced the red carpet in a teal Rachel Roy gown. She was simply stunning in this look and actually had 9 wardrobe changes throughout the evening.

I also loved Iman's coral gown with matching bolero. As one of the honorees for the evening she seems to just get better and better with age.
With all of this fabulous fashion, I know you can't wait to see the show itself! Tune in to BET on February 21st!

Bvlgari Event for Charity

To kick off the weekend of awards shows, on Thursday January 13th Bvlgari hosted a star studded party in Beverly Hills. Benefiting Save the Children and Artists for Peace and Justice, this event brought out a number of celebs and of course, I have selected my top three "black" carpet looks.

Purple is my little StyleMayvin-in-training's favorite color so this dark violet Prada silk dress with cap sleeves was the first to catch my eye. Kirstin Dunst kept it simple yet elegant with chic heels and minimal jewelry. Loved it!

Next up...a very funny and talented lady, Niecy Nash. This form fitting mock wrap dress fits her perfectly and paired with an accessory I wrote about early last year, nude heels, makes the look refreshing and right on trend. Tip: Nude heels complement ANY outfit and elongates the leg. Great look for you Niecy.

Lastly, model and Resident Evil star, Milla Jovovich wore a flowy maxi print dress. Granted it looked a little South Beach in Beverly Hills, it looked really fun to wear and made me smile so that in itself made it stunning. I also loved the jewelry and the clutch! This was a perfect look for her...honestly, I would expect nothing less than a little flair from a model. Cudos Milla!

The Sheath Dress - Key Piece #2

The Sheath Dress is one of the most classic items you can own. I personally have the style in a few different lengths, prints and fabrics in my closet!

Many dresses are named for where you wear them like ball gowns and cocktail dresses but this dress, dating back as far as the 1950's, is named for it's fit. The word sheath literally means "close-fitting covering or case" so now you KNOW why the ladies (and men) look this look. Even Barbie wore this classic! If you love this look as much as you should and want to find a vintage print reminiscent of the always trendy Barbie, raid your Grandmother's closet, check out your nearest vintage shop or scout them out online.

If you want a more updated look, this simple yet chic design by Single available on Bluefly.com ($129) has the required bust and waist darts as well as the classically cut neckline and short cap sleeves....plus, the cherry on top--it highlights your curves with an eye catching belt!

One of my top style icons and Queen of classic style, Jackie Kennedy Onassis favored the Sheath Dress because of it's nipped waist and often paired it with a pill top hat or jacket. Almost any accessory complements the sheath dress and because it can be worn at virtually any time of year...you simply can't go wrong with this look.

People's Choice Awards 2011

The People's Choice Awards aired on CBS last night and although I didn't catch the entire show...I saw the most important part (to me)...THE RED CARPET FASHION!

Hosted by Queen Latifah, who had about 4 or 5 really nice wardrobe changes (two thumbs up to her stylist). In my opinion, her best look was the strapless, white Grecian gown. Flawless!

The "Blue" Carpet was a bit lack-luster to me but one reality star who never disappoints, Kim Kardashian top my list of best dressed celebs! The hair, accessories and shoes complement this dress perfectly. BRAVO!

In 2nd place...Model - Niki Taylor... I am a firm believer in the elegance of a black gown or LBD for formal events but as I always say "Black should never be basic" and the eye catching neckline on this dress says it all!

Rounding out my top three picks is Actress Tiffany Hines. One of the stars on the TV Series 'Lie to Me", name went for a unique dress that not everyone can pull off. The look... complete with feather and sparkle detail in one of my favorite colors simply makes me smile. AND... because I LOVE LOVE LOVE any opportunity to be a bit "different" yet trendy and chic all at the same time, she gets major cudos for wearing this leggy look!

A New You in the New Year

By StyleMayvin Staff Writer: Shelby Christie

Here are 3 beauty tricks to try, this New Year, to give you something a little bit different…something new!

Trick number one is an easy, everyday switch up. Go for a bolder eye by pairing a shimmery skin-toned shadow with a black lined lid. The shimmer in the shadow will give you a fresh face, while the flesh-tone color adds a “natural” glow. Add a clean line of black liquid liner to your top lid for a bit sultry finesse. Top off your eye makeup with a coat of black mascara (my favorite is DiorShow Blackout by Dior) for a dramatic finish. This subtle shimmer will keep you looking vibrant during the rainiest of spring days!

If you like to keep your make natural and lightweight this next tip will be perfect for you. Replace your usual cheek bronzer or blush with a rose colored shade. A light dust of a soft pale pink will give your cheeks a “just pinched” look. A touch of pink is also a great way to transition your make-up into the spring season. The shade makes the skin appear warm without the shimmer of a bronzer. You can’t go wrong with a matte face and a rosy cheek! Try the shade Amour by Nars…it’s the signature pink blush of Beyonce and looks great on all skin tones!

…and I saved the best (and most important) for last! SUNSCREEN! Just because the sun doesn’t always shine, during the spring months, does not mean you can skimp on the sunscreen! In order to have a beautiful and healthy complexion you have to protect it. UVA and UVB rays can cause sun damage under the surface of the skin that can lead to wrinkles and age spots! So choose a moisturizer with a built in sun block. I have sensitive skin, so I use Aveeno Positively Radiant daily moisturizer with SPF 30. It is an all natural formula and I find that it is less greasy than most sunscreens. Another great option n is Neutrogena Healthy Defense daily moisturizer SPF 50. This sunscreen is packed with minerals, it great for the more mature face. Keep your face as fresh (and healthy) as your style…

Try a few, or ALL, of these tips to give you a little sprucing up this year!

Happy New Year!

Happy 2011 Everyone! Just because the holidays are over, that doesn't mean the celebrations need to end!

I'm all about being dressed to the nines, even when you don't necessarily have any special place to go. I always say, if you leave home...make sure you look like it. Put it a little effort and it will always pay off...trust me! So with that in mind here are a few great style ideas for 2011.

Sequins: This is one of my favorite looks! At one time, wearing sequins were reserved for evening events but I believe a little sparkle in your day, can go a long way! This look from JC Penny ($86.99) can be dressed down with a blazer or cardigan sweater and a pair of shoe booties.

Sometimes after the Holidays, people get a bit depressed...maybe you spent too much money on Christmas gifts and that credit card bill sent you into toxic shock, maybe the cold weather gets you down...but whatever it is, COLOR can always brighten your day! Pick a vibrant color that matches your skin tone best and rock it! One of my personal favorite colors is purple and because my #1 silhouette is (let's all say it together...) "the one shoulder look", I thought this top would be absolutely perfect for me! Not to mention...the price would make you put away the credit card and pull out the almost forgotten method of payment...good old cash! At $29.40 from GoJane.com , this look is perfect for a day of shopping or a night out with the girls.

Metallics: Why not go for high gloss shine in 2011? Metallics are eye-catching and when done right, you can bring attention to all the right places. Whether you go for a top, skirt or dress, metallics definitely turn up the volume of your look. This Metallic Croc Print Dress by Michael Kors (available at SaksFifthAvenue.com for $150) is GORGEOUS! The exposed front zipper gives it a very "on trend" look, the belted waist will accentuate almost any figure and the metallic croc print...simply GENIUS!
Ring in the new year with any or all of these fabulous new styles and trends. Stay In The KNOW for 2011 with StyleMayvin!!!
